How long is the growth cycle of bamboo?

Introduction to Bamboo Growth

Phyllostachys nanmu is a perennial tall tree mainly distributed in the tropical regions of Central Asia. It grows best in hilly and low mountain areas with small temperature differences, balanced precipitation, and below 800 meters above sea level. It is mainly distributed in southern my country and Taiwan Province, and is also cultivated in many places in the Yellow River Basin.

Bamboo growth cycle

Nanzhu prefers warm and humid climatic conditions and has strict requirements on soil. It is suitable for planting in fertile, loose, well-drained acidic sandy soil or sandy loam. It does not like places with heavy and dry soil.

The growth cycle of nanmu bamboo is relatively short, and it usually takes only two months from the emergence of shoots to the maturity of bamboo.

Growth rate of bamboo

Nanzhu grows fast. It starts to sprout in March every year. The peak growing season is from April to May. It can grow about 80 mm a day and can become mature in four years. After the mature Nanzhu is harvested, the bamboo rhizomes under the ground will sprout again, grow into bamboo shoots, and become bamboos, continuing to grow.

Bamboo growth cycle management

Nanzhu has very strong growth ability and grows very fast. It grows 1/3 faster than other fastest trees. It can become timber in 3-5 years, but traditional hardwood needs 10-20 years before it can be used.

Temperature management: Nanzhu prefers a warm and humid climate, requiring an annual average temperature of 14-20 degrees. It is not cold-resistant and needs to take warming measures in winter to avoid frost damage.

Fertilization management: Nanzhu is mainly applied with compound fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorus. In addition, organic fertilizers and cake fertilizers are also needed during the growth period. Organic fertilizers can be buried in the soil when digging trenches or holes in autumn and winter.
