Cypress pruning

Pruning cypress trees can reduce the number of sprouts, cultivate strong branches, improve the nutritional status of the plant, improve the ventilation and light conditions of the cypress tree, enhance the tree's vigor, and improve its ornamental value.

Cypress Tree Pruning Time

Cypress trees can be pruned in spring. If you want to prune large branches, you can choose to do it in winter, which will cause less damage to the plants. Generally speaking, cypress trees only need to be pruned once a year.

Cypress tree pruning method

The branches that are pruned during the growth of cypress trees are mainly dead branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, thin branches, overcrowded branches, leggy branches, suckers and unsightly branches. Depending on the requirements and methods, they can be divided into two types: shortening and thinning.

Shortening is to cut off part of the branches, retaining some branches and a certain number of buds on the branches. It is mainly carried out in winter. Due to the different lengths of the branches cut, the reaction after pruning is also different. Light shortening is used for vigorously growing branches to make them medium or short branches. Heavy shortening is used for weak or medium growing branches to cultivate them into strong branches.

Thinning branches is done by pruning close to the trunk at the base of the branches, removing weak branches, overlapping branches, crossed branches, overcrowded branches, diseased and dead branches, etc. It is mainly used for cypress trees planted in the ground or in pots, and is mostly done in winter.

Cypress tree pruning precautions

When pruning cypress trees, you must pay attention to the fact that the scissors need to be disinfected and must not contain bacteria, so that the harm to the plants will be less. After pruning, the maintenance environment must be kept ventilated and the air humidity must not be too high. A dry climate will be more conducive to wound recovery.
