How and when to plant broad beans

Broad bean planting time and month

Broad beans can be sown in spring and autumn. The spring sowing time is generally from March to April, and the autumn sowing time is generally from October to November. Spring sowing should be timely and early sowing so that the seedlings emerge evenly. Dry-seed broad beans should be avoided from being sown in early autumn to avoid the effect of low temperature and frost during the flowering period on the results.

Planting broad beans in spring

Plant broad beans in spring, and sow them from mid-to-late March to early April. For broad beans planted with mulch, cover the sowing holes with ash soil immediately after sowing. If the soil is compacted, break it up and plant the seedlings in time. In addition, special attention should be paid to the prevention and control of pests such as root nodules during the seedling stage, and spray pesticides as early as possible for prevention.

Planting broad beans in autumn

Broad beans are planted in autumn and sown from early October to early November. They like warm and humid conditions, have a certain degree of cold resistance, are relatively alkali-resistant, not acid-resistant, not waterlogged, and not drought-resistant. The minimum temperature for seed germination is 3-4 degrees, the suitable temperature is 16 degrees, and the suitable temperature for nutritional growth is 16-22 degrees.

Broad bean planting method

Broad beans require relatively low temperatures during their growth period. They begin to germinate at around 4 degrees, and the optimum temperature for emergence is 9-12 degrees. The formation of vegetative organs is 14-16 degrees, the formation of reproductive organs is 16-20 degrees, and the podding period is 16-22 degrees. Heat damage begins to occur when the temperature is above 27 degrees.

Broad beans require sufficient light. If the plants are too large during the flowering and pod-setting period and seriously shade each other, a large number of flowers and pods will fall off. Therefore, the density should be controlled during planting to ensure sufficient light. Broad beans have different water requirements at different growth stages. More water is required when the seeds germinate, and the seedlings are more drought-resistant. The water requirement gradually increases when buds appear.

First, soak the bean sprouts in cold water for a day and a night. After you see the small white sprouts of the bean sprouts, you can bury them in the soil of the flowerpot at a depth of 3 to 5 cm. If you bury them too shallowly, the seeds will be washed out when watering. Be sure to water them thoroughly for the first time. They will germinate in about 3-7 days. When the bean sprouts grow to about 20 cm, insert a bamboo stick next to it to guide it to climb upwards.
