When is the best time to sow tobacco?

Tobacco planting time

Tobacco belongs to the genus Nicotiana of the Solanaceae family. It has relatively high requirements for temperature and prefers a warm environment. Different temperature conditions will affect its quality and yield. If the temperature is high, it will inhibit its growth, and low temperatures can promote its early development.

Tobacco planting is divided into spring tobacco and summer tobacco. Spring tobacco is generally planted in spring and can be sown in February and March, while summer tobacco in the south is planted in April and May. However, due to differences in regional climate, its planting time is also different. For example, tobacco planting in Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian is generally in September and October.

Tobacco sowing method

Cultivating strong seedlings is a key part of tobacco cultivation and planting work, and is also very important for future growth after transplanting. Several measures need to be taken:

1. Tobacco planting requires selecting a seedling bed that is sheltered from the wind, facing the sun, with high terrain and dryness. Flat ground is also conducive to sowing and management of tobacco seedlings. Vegetable gardens and old seedling beds are not conducive to seedling cultivation, and the chance of infection and spread of pests and diseases is relatively high.

2. In the seedbed preparation stage, the seedbed should be turned over first, then the debris should be removed and the ground should be compacted. Then the seedbed should be deep plowed for disinfection, the soil should be matured, and standard preparation should be carried out. This can effectively kill pests and diseases.

3. To facilitate thinning and transplanting, it is necessary to ensure that the seedlings are evenly distributed among each other. Therefore, the coated seeds should be sown in open water and with precise spot sowing. Generally, 2-3 seeds are sown per square meter.

4. Relatively speaking, agricultural waste materials such as sugarcane, straw, etc. in farmland are renewable and cheap raw materials and can be used in tobacco fields.

Tobacco harvest

According to different climatic conditions, tobacco is generally divided into winter tobacco, spring tobacco and summer tobacco. Winter tobacco is planted before the New Year, spring tobacco is planted in February and March, and summer tobacco is planted around May. It starts to be harvested in July and August, and is harvested once a year. Most tobacco is planted once a year, and some are planted after the wheat harvest.
