What fertilizer is good for orchids?

Overview of Orchid Fertilization

Orchids are heat-resistant but not cold-resistant. They prefer a warm and humid environment. Different varieties have different cold and heat resistance abilities, but most of them grow slowly below 5℃. Orchids will grow slowly above 35℃.

Orchids can be given an appropriate amount of inorganic fertilizer, which needs to be diluted with water. After the diluted fertilizer is applied, it can be sprayed with water once every ten days or so. This can make the leaves denser and greener. Orchid-specific slow-release fertilizer can effectively promote the growth of orchid roots, but the amount of slow-release fertilizer should not be too much, otherwise it will burn the roots and affect the normal growth of the orchid.

What fertilizer is good for orchids?

1. Use phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to help orchids bloom quickly, such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate and Huaduoduo No. 2. Do not use phosphorus and potassium fertilizers after the flowers have faded.

2. When the orchid enters the stage of flower bud growth, directly using multi-element fertilizer, or fertilizer with high nitrogen content and other elements, will promote its rapid sprouting and leaf growth.

3. Inorganic fertilizer can be chosen for orchid leaves, but it needs to be diluted before use. Just spray it on the leaves. Spray it once every 10 days or so to make the leaves greener.

How to fertilize orchids

Using nitrogen and potassium fertilizers, such as urea, during the spring and autumn growth seasons of orchid leaves can make the orchid cells swell, promote the growth of stems and leaves, make the leaves lush and the leaves dark green. Fertilization should be done in sunny weather and do not apply fertilizer when the temperature is above 30°C.

Spring fertilization

When the average daily temperature in spring reaches above 10 degrees, orchids can begin to grow. The best time to apply fertilizer is when the average daily temperature is above 15 degrees for 5 consecutive days. You can choose organic fertilizer mixed with compound fertilizer with a high nitrogen content for root application.

Summer fertilization

Orchids will enter a dormant period in summer, so they need less fertilizer. You can stop fertilizing them to better protect them. If the indoor temperature can be controlled at around 30 degrees, spray some foliar fertilizer appropriately.

Fall Fertilization

The best time to fertilize orchids in autumn is from late August to early October. The nutritional needs are high at this time. Apply some diluted fertilizer or decomposed liquid fertilizer to supplement the needs of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.

Winter fertilization

Applying basal fertilizer in winter is the basic nutrient fertilizer that meets the nutrient needs of flower bud morphological differentiation and the entire growth and development period. The time for fertilization can be just after entering winter.

Points to note when fertilizing orchids

1. When fertilizing orchids, organic fertilizers must be fully fermented, and inorganic fertilizers should be kept away from the roots. Keeping them too close will severely burn the orchid plants. Whether it is organic fertilizer or inorganic fertilizer, it needs to be diluted highly when used.

2. If the orchid roots are burned when fertilizing, the bad roots need to be pruned off and the pruning must be clean. After pruning the roots, the roots must be carefully disinfected and then replanted.

3. If the yellowing of orchid leaves is caused by excessive fertilization, wash away the fertilizer in the soil with water in time. If it is caused by strong light, place it in a cool place.

4. Orchids prefer semi-shaded environments and are afraid of strong sunlight. After fertilizing, they need to be placed in an environment with scattered light. If the light is too strong, it will affect the growth of the plant.
