How to propagate ivy and what to pay attention to

How to propagate ivy

The common ways of propagating ivy are seed propagation, cutting propagation, water propagation and layering propagation. Its seeds can be propagated, and the natural way of propagating ivy is sowing propagation. Generally speaking, cutting propagation is the fastest.

Ivy breeding time

Ivy can be propagated by cuttings all year round. If you consider all aspects, it is recommended that June to October is the best time for propagation, as the survival rate is high.

Ivy propagation method

Ivy seed propagation

Ivy can be propagated by sowing in the areas south of the Yangtze River and in southern China. The ivy fruits are harvested when they are ripe, soaked in water, rubbed, rinsed, and dried in the shade for storage. They should be sown in the spring of the second year. The sowing depth should not be too deep, and a layer of soil and grass should be covered to keep it moist. After the seedlings emerge from the soil and grow up, they can be transplanted for cultivation.

Hydroponic Ivy Propagation

Ivy can be hydroponically cultivated in spring and autumn. First, select the semi-lignified branches of ivy, cut off the leaves on the lower part, and then insert them directly into clean water. Its roots have the characteristics of aerial roots and will quickly adapt to the water environment. In the early stage of hydroponics, you should pay attention to changing the water frequently. The water needs to be changed every 1-2 days to ensure the water is clean.

In about 10 days, white and tender roots will grow out of ivy. After the new roots grow out, the water needs to be changed in time. About half a month later, nutrient solution for foliage plants can be added to the water. Maintain it in an environment with good light, and replace the nutrient solution and water every 2 to 3 weeks.

Ivy propagation precautions

Ivy has a wide adaptability to soil and can use ordinary culture soil. It likes a moist and humid environment, but the potting soil needs to be kept slightly dry in winter, providing a growing environment of 18-20 degrees. The summer temperature should be below 35 degrees and the winter temperature should be above 5 degrees.
