How to care for succulents during dormancy

How to determine whether succulents have entered a dormant period

The leaves of succulents are often thick and cute, feel particularly comfortable to the touch, and have unique ornamental value. However, there are several specific manifestations of succulents during their dormant period.

The bright leaves suddenly become dull in color; the entire succulent has basically no difference in color; the roots stop sprouting; some leaves fall off and show signs of dehydration and shrinkage; some even lose entire leaves; the entire plant grows very slowly and there is basically no growth, etc., which can be observed with the naked eye.

Moisture Management

The growth of succulents cannot be separated from the continuous supply of water, but too much water during the dormant period becomes a burden or even a hazard. Therefore, succulents must be watered less at this time. Even if you have to water them, only a small amount should be sprayed around the plants. The amount of water should be just enough to moisten the surface of the potting soil. Only in this way can the succulents safely pass through the dormant period.

Ventilation treatment

Succulents in the dormant period need to maintain air circulation. A closed and stuffy environment will cause water to not evaporate for a long time, resulting in the roots of dormant succulents being soaked and rotting.

Temperature conditions

To prevent frost damage, succulents that hibernate in winter should be moved to an environment with a temperature of at least 18 degrees Celsius for protection. Succulent plants that go dormant in the summer should be moved away from the strong light outdoors and moved to a dark, diffused light indoor environment, and the indoor temperature should be controlled below 30 degrees.

Only by following the above maintenance methods can you ensure that fresh succulents safely pass through the dormant period.
