Plum Growth Environmental Conditions and Requirements

Plum is a common fruit with a sour taste. It is widely grown in Shaanxi, Gansu, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan and Jiangsu in China. Plums are highly adaptable to climate and generally prefer to grow in warm and sunny places.

Plum growing temperature

Plums like warm environments. If plums want to germinate, the temperature of the environment must be above zero degrees. The most suitable growth temperature for plums is around 18 degrees. Generally, during the dormant period of plums, they can withstand temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees.

Plum growth humidity

Plums like a humid environment but are afraid of waterlogging, so the amount of watering needs to be controlled during the growth period. During the budding period of the plums, the soil only needs to be kept moist. During the growth and fruiting periods, the frequency of watering needs to be increased.

Plum growing soil

The roots of plums spread quite deep, so they are generally more suitable to be planted in sandy loam that is deep, fertile, loose and well-drained. The pH value of the soil should be between 6.5 and 7.5.

Plum growth cycle and process

Plums are usually grafted and planted after July in summer. The general growth cycle is one year. Plums will bloom in April in spring. The plum fruits usually take 3 months to mature, and the fruits will be ripe in July or August in autumn.
