Sweet potato is an important economic crop and food crop. It has the characteristics of wide planting range, high yield, drought resistance, barrenness resistance and strong adaptability, and has broad planting prospects. So in the process of growing sweet potatoes, how can we grow vegetables to achieve high yields of sweet potatoes? Let’s learn more about it below. 1. Plot selection Sweet potatoes prefer a warm, sunny environment, so you should choose a plot with higher terrain, good ventilation, light and good drainage. The soil should be loose and fertile sandy loam or yellow loam, with a pH value between 5.5-6.5. 2. Land preparation and fertilization After the previous crop is harvested, apply sufficient base fertilizer before winter. Generally, 2000-5000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer and 50-100 kg of compound fertilizer can be applied per mu of land. The land should be plowed deep to 25-30 cm in time. If the land has not been plowed before winter, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied during spring plowing. The land after plowing should be leveled in time and raked carefully to retain moisture. 3. Seed selection and seedling raising When raising potato seedlings, it is advisable to choose potato tubers that are of moderate size (single potato weight should be 200-300 grams), neat and uniform, free of pests and diseases, wounds, and cold damage as seeds. Cut the sweet potato tubers into small pieces, each with 1-2 buds, and then spread them flat on moist sandy or peat soil, maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity for germination. When the potato seedlings grow to 15-30 cm, they can be transplanted. 4. Planting method On the prepared field, dig small holes according to the standard of 40-60 cm row spacing and 20-30 cm plant spacing. Mix the potato seedlings with a small amount of wood ash or compound fertilizer, put them into the holes, and cover them with soil. The planting depth should be 1/3-1/2 of the seedling length. 5. Field management During the growth period, it is necessary to carry out topdressing, vine lifting and soil cultivation in a timely manner to keep the soil loose, and topdressing should be combined with watering during the tuber expansion period. In addition, timely tillage and weeding should be carried out during the growing period to prevent weeds from competing with sweet potatoes for water and nutrients. 6. Harvest and storage Sweet potatoes are generally harvested in autumn, when the local temperature drops below 15°C. Before harvesting, watering should be stopped in advance to allow the soil to dry appropriately for easy harvesting. When harvesting, the sweet potatoes should be dug out of the soil, excess soil and leaves should be removed, and they should be dried in the sun until the skin is dry before storage. The above is the sharing of high-yield cultivation techniques for sweet potatoes. Of course, specific adjustments need to be made based on actual planting conditions. However, only by fully mastering these techniques and key points and doing a good job of detailed management can we ultimately obtain high-yield, high-quality sweet potatoes.
