Can bowl lotus be grown in sand?

Can bowl lotus be grown in sand?

1. Can

Theoretically, yes. Generally speaking, a plant can survive as long as it requires light, water, nutrients and other materials. Here is a question. Sand is just pure particles and does not contain any nutrients. Can it feed plants?

2. Reasons

Generally, this kind of cultivation of plants using sand as the substrate without any soil substrate is called soilless cultivation. This method uses bacteria-free water and sand instead of soil as the growth medium for plants. Mix inorganic fertilizers in it as nutrients for plants.

3. Advantages

This method can effectively avoid diseases and pests caused by soil pollution; the inorganic fertilizer added in it has no odor, will not breed mosquitoes, and is very clean and hygienic. The lotus grown in this way has leaves that are a darker green, and has many large and beautiful flowers with a particularly long flowering period.

4. How to raise

(1) Soilless cultivation requires a suitable container. Generally, a round glass tank for raising goldfish is used. Then, a layer of opaque black paper or black cloth is wrapped on the outside of the tank, and finally a layer of white paper is wrapped. This is a way to maintain darkness, which not only prevents the nutrient liquid from breeding algae under light, but also helps prevent the underground stems of the plant from turning green and affecting the blooming of flowers. If you don’t want to go through so much trouble, you can just buy a porcelain basin or a purple clay basin.

(2) The type of sand you can choose is coarse sand, which is mainly used to fix the position of the lotus root. When planting, first place the lotus root horizontally on the surface of the sand, and then put some sand on it to cover the entire lotus root. It is worth noting that the tail of the lotus root must be curled upwards. Finally, slowly pour water into the basin.

(3) Since the lotus root itself contains nutrients, it will sprout and grow stems, and then grow leaves.

(4) However, since the nutrients in lotus roots will be consumed sooner or later, you should add some nutrient solution containing rich elements once a week.
