When and how to repot roses

When and how to repot roses

Rose , as a member of the Rosaceae family, is a deciduous shrub . Its vine-like or creeping growth habit and rich flower colors make it an ornamental plant that blooms all year round. Rose comes in a variety of colors, including red, pink, yellow, white, orange, purple, as well as various borders and bicolors, and is known as the "Queen of Flowers." It is one of the favorites of home flower lovers and is especially popular in indoor potted plants . Roses grow quickly and need to be repotted once a year to accommodate their growth. Let’s learn together the time and method of repotting roses.

1. Preparation of culture soil

Before repotting, you need to prepare suitable culture soil. Due to the limited space in the flowerpot, a special soil environment is required to meet the growth needs of roses. The culture soil should be loose, with good drainage and water retention. Roses prefer slightly acidic soil, and the pH value should be between 6 and 7. The recommended culture soil formula is a mixture of 20-30% compost, 30% wood ash, and 30-40% sand or garden soil. After the soil is prepared, it is best to sterilize it by high temperature disinfection or exposure to sunlight to sterilize it.

2. Remove the basin

Roses usually need to be repotted once a year, with the best time being in late fall or early spring. Before repotting, let the soil dry slightly to facilitate removal from the pot. First, use a bamboo stick to separate the soil from the pot wall, then pinch the base of the rose with your fingers, turn it over and tap the edge of the pot to separate the pot from the soil.

3. Repair

Remove one-third to one-half of the bottom soil and cut off old, diseased, stumpy, and overly long roots to encourage new root growth.

4. Choice of flower pots

It is usually recommended to use clay pots to grow roses, while porcelain pots are only suitable as inner pots. The size of the flowerpot should match the crown diameter of the rose plant. One-year-old roses are suitable for pots with a diameter of 15-20 cm, two-year-old seedlings are suitable for pots with a diameter of 20-25 cm, and roses over three years old should choose large pots with a diameter of more than 30 cm.

5. Put it in the basin

Place broken tiles at the bottom of the pot and add potting soil. Place the rose plant in the center of the pot, making sure the roots are spread out and evenly distributed. When filling the soil, compact it layer by layer until it reaches half of the pot. Lift the plant gently and shake it to compact the soil. Do not plant too deep, keep the roots level with the rim of the pot. The soil in the pot should be kept 2-4 cm away from the mouth of the pot.

6. Management

Water thoroughly after repotting to help the roots integrate with the soil. After repotting, keep it in a shaded place for about a week. After the root system recovers, move it to a sunny place and manage it according to the usual methods. This way, the rose will thrive in its new pot and continue to display its beautiful flowers.

The above is an introduction to the time and method of repotting roses. When growing roses, many flower lovers will ignore the step of repotting. In fact, this step is also very important.
