How to judge whether succulents enter dormancy (how to judge whether succulents enter dormancy)

Succulent plants are very cute and easy to grow. Flower lovers who have raised succulents know that succulents have a dormant season, some in summer and some in winter, and the growing season is mainly concentrated in spring and autumn.

So what is the state of succulents when they are dormant? Let me share with you briefly.

Why do succulents go dormant?

It is mainly due to seasonal reasons. Under the influence of temperature and light, succulents take self-protection measures to resist the harsh environment. They maintain their vital signs by consuming their own nutrients during dormancy.

During the growth process of succulents, when the highest temperature in summer and the lowest temperature in winter are reached, there will be a period of dormancy or semi-dormancy. As long as they are properly maintained, succulents will not die whether they are semi-dormant or dormant, and they will grow again after the dormant period.

Then, the status during sleep mainly includes the following aspects.

1. Observe the leaves of succulents

When succulents are dormant, they mostly rely on consuming nutrients from the leaves, starting from the bottom leaves. From the appearance, you can see that the bottom leaves begin to shrink first and then slowly dry up.

This is the nutrients and water being absorbed by the leaves and stems above, which can be easily judged .

2. State atrophy

Succulents, such as mountain roses, shrink their leaves together during dormancy.

After shrinking, the plant will be very small and not as full and open as it is during the growth period. You can almost tell at a glance that it is in a dormant state. Many leaves of this type of succulent are shrunken.

3. Growth stagnation

There are also some succulents that do not appear to be dormant because they have no leaves and are rhizome plants, such as cacti, lithops, etc.

It is impossible to tell from the outside that they are dormant, and we can only rely on long-term observation to see whether they are growing.

If it still doesn't move, it's basically dormant, like in summer when it stops growing. Succulents mainly go dormant in summer and winter, so it's relatively easy to tell.
