Potting soil

"To raise fish, you need to take care of the water; to raise orchids, you need to take care of the soil." This shows the importance of soil to the growth of orchids, which is also the issue that orchid growers are most concerned about. Huahua will introduce to you several secret recipes for preparing potting soil to ensure that your orchids bloom more and more.

1. Leaf mold + rice husk + honeycomb coal slag

Mix leaf mold, decomposed rice husks and honeycomb coal slag in a ratio of 2:1:1. Crush the honeycomb briquettes, wash them with water, mix them and dry them in the sun for 2 days. This kind of soil is not easy to become compacted, has good fertility, and orchids can easily grow strong roots.

2. Coconut bran + coal slag

Mix coconut bran and coal slag in a ratio of 1:1. The coconut bran is selected to be coarse and fermented, and the coal slag is treated with water. This kind of soil has good air permeability and is suitable for orchids with weak root systems.

Watering

As the saying goes, it takes a little effort to plant orchids, but three years of watering is required. Watering is a common topic, but whether watering is done correctly is related to the success or failure of orchid cultivation.

1. Early flowering period

When the temperature is around 20-25 degrees in spring, you can spray water every 2-3 days before the orchid blooms, and water it heavily once a week. Too much water will cause the orchid plant to grow too tall and make it difficult for flower buds to form. If there is a lack of water, orchids are prone to bud clamping.

2. Flowering period

If you want the orchid to bloom more beautifully, you must control water during the flowering period. When the orchid scape is elongated and the stamens are about to shed their bracts, water the orchid thoroughly. The orchids that bloom in this way are beautiful in appearance and have a long flowering period.

3. Daily maintenance

Follow the principle of not watering until the soil is dry, and water thoroughly when you do. You can insert a bamboo stick into the soil for 10 minutes and then pull it out. If the surface of the bamboo stick is dry, you need to water it. Water it thoroughly at one time until water flows out from the bottom of the pot.

Light Temperature

Light affects whether the orchid's flowers are beautiful in color and whether the leaves are shiny and healthy.

1. Increase the temperature difference

To promote orchid flowering, you need to increase the temperature difference between day and night. The most suitable temperature is 18-21 degrees during the day and 7-10 degrees at night, which makes it easier for the plant to bloom.

If the temperature is too high at night, the orchid's leaves will easily become soft and the flower buds will fall off. If the temperature is too low, the leaves will easily develop spots.

2. Lighting

Generally, orchids need 2 to 3 hours of light. Under normal circumstances, if the orchid leaves are shiny and tough, dark green and soft, it means that more light is needed, while if the leaves are light yellow, it means that less light is needed.

Red and yellow orchids: During the bud formation stage, place the orchid on a balcony or window with bright light, and the color of the flowers will be darker.

Green and white orchids: reduce the light intensity when the buds just form, and then increase the light after the flowers bloom. This will help the flowers to be more elegant.

Fertilization

Whether an orchid can have a well-developed root system, a strong plant, and produce many beautiful flowers depends on many factors, but fertilization is the most critical step.

1. Growth period

You can apply about 15% fully decomposed thin cake fertilizer water, or 0.1% urea fertilizer water plus 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate fertilizer water, once every 15 to 20 days.

2. Flower bud differentiation period

During the flower bud differentiation period, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate, once every half month, for 2-3 times.

3. Flowering period

During the flowering period, 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution can be sprayed on the leaves 2-3 times to promote the development of roots, stems and flowers.

Basin

Potting can be said to be the most hated step for flower lovers. It is both tedious and easy to damage the roots of the seedlings. Today, Huahua will explain to flower lovers in detail how to pot flowers correctly.

1. Root pruning

Before potting, prune the orchid's roots first, cut off roots that are too long or too short, empty roots, black roots, and broken roots, and keep 3-4 healthy roots for each seedling.

2. Soak in carbendazim

After trimming the roots, soak the entire orchid root in a solution of carbendazim.

3. Use plastic bottles as breathable covers

Poke holes in the leftover beverage bottles and use scissors to cut a few small triangular openings on the bottom edge of the bottles.

Put it at the bottom of the flower pot to retain water and avoid water accumulation. Secure the beverage bottle with plastic foam blocks.

4. Plant orchids in pots

Place the orchid seedling in the appropriate position in the pot, let the pseudobulb (rhizome) be about 1 cm higher than the pot, and add planting material evenly by hand.

5. Slap the flower pot

Shake the flowerpot or tap it gently to make the orchid roots fit better with the planting material and avoid large holes.
