How to propagate Borage

How to propagate Borage

1. Seed propagation

(1) Time selection: This type of plant can generally be propagated by seeds or by raising seedlings for transplanting. If we adopt the open field cultivation method, we usually choose spring as the main time, mainly because the temperature is more suitable during this period. If it is a protected cultivation method, it can be carried out throughout the year according to specific needs.

(2) Seed collection and processing: Choose a sunny afternoon for seed collection. Place a few sheets of paper under the tree and shake the trunk. Because the seeds of this plant are small nuts with a very hard skin, they need special treatment before formal sowing. Soak them in warm water for one to two days and change the water every day. In this way, the seedlings will emerge faster and more evenly.

(3) Sowing: Sow the processed seeds using the “hole sowing” method, spreading them on the prepared sowing ground. Just sprinkle three or four grains into each hole, not too many. After sowing, you need to cover it with a layer of fine soil. The soil layer should not be too thick, about two to three centimeters is enough.

(4) Note: If it is done in March or April, the seeds will basically germinate and grow a few leaves by around May. At this time, in order to promote the growth, development and branching of the plants, we can use two or three times of fertilizer to promote it. In addition, when it grows to about 20 centimeters, we need to "pinch" it.

2. Other methods

Seeding is the most commonly used method. Although there are other methods, they are very rare and will not be introduced here.
