Why do camellia buds fall off?

Why do camellia buds fall off?

1. Improper watering

Reason: Camellia is drought-resistant but not moisture-tolerant. If you water it too much and water accumulates in the soil, the camellia buds will fall off. Severe waterlogging may even cause root rot. However, the soil cannot be too dry, otherwise the camellia buds will fall off.

Solution: Insert a bamboo stick into the soil along the edge of the pot, pull it out and check it from time to time. If the stick turns white or dry, water it thoroughly in time.

2. Insufficient nutrients

Reason: Camellia has a very long bud formation period. If the soil lacks nutrients, the camellia will lack nutrition and will drop the buds. In addition, if there are too many buds on a branch, the camellia will feel that the nutrient supply is insufficient and will also drop the buds.

Solution: Apply enough slow-release fertilizer when repotting camellia. During the differentiation of flower buds, apply fertilizer every half a month until the flower buds are formed. When the flower buds grow to the size of soybeans, thin them out, leaving 1-2 flower buds on each branch.

3. Excessive fertilization

Reason: Camellia likes to be fertilized frequently with thin amounts of fertilizer. If too much fertilizer is applied, the plant will drop flower buds, and if the fertilizer damage is serious, the leaves will shed wildly.

Solution: When camellia is damaged by fertilizer, use plenty of water to flush the potting soil to wash out the overly concentrated fertilizer water, dilute it and place it in a cool and ventilated place to slow down the potting.

4. Environmental Change

Reason: After the camellia buds appear, if the plant is moved frequently to allow the camellia to adapt to the new environment, the buds will easily fall off. In addition, the maintenance temperature should not exceed 35℃ and should not be lower than 0℃, otherwise the camellia will drop flowers and buds.

Solution: After the camellia buds appear, do not move the plant frequently. Keep the maintenance temperature above 0℃ in a relatively cool place. Ensure that there is sufficient water but no water accumulation. Just expose it to more sunlight in autumn and winter and wait for it to bloom!
