How to propagate elderberry by cuttings

Cutting method

Choose the soil

We usually choose plain sandy soil for elderberry cuttings. The sandy soil must be disinfected before cuttings.

Select cuttings

When choosing cuttings, be careful to select a branch from a plant that is growing well and strong, and that is not harmed by pests and diseases. Cut a paper strip into cuttings of about 20 cm in length each, making sure there are three or more buds on each cutting. Bundle ten cuttings together and soak them in clean water to increase the survival rate of the cuttings.

Keep spacing

When taking cuttings, pay attention to the row spacing, which is about 15cm. Also, note that the distance between each cutting is about 10cm. Too dense a distance will be detrimental to the absorption of water, oxygen and light, leading to slow growth.

Cutting time

It is important to choose the right month for cuttings. It is best to choose mid-to-late March for cuttings, when the climate is not too hot, which helps ensure that water is not lost too much during the cutting process.

Specific operations

Bundle ten selected cuttings together, soak them in clean water, and then plant them in the cutting bed, leaving a 10-cm space between plants, and the spacing between cutting rows must also be 15 cm. After cuttings, water thoroughly and provide shade.

Watering

After the cuttings are completed, water them thoroughly immediately. If conditions permit, you can build a shed to maintain the humidity of the surrounding environment. And keep the habit of watering thoroughly once a week.

Do not expose the cuttings to direct sunlight right after they are transplanted. If conditions permit, you can set up a shade net to provide shade. Pay attention to sun protection, and you can transplant them when the weather is cool in late autumn.
