How to propagate elderberry

Elderberry can be propagated by division, cuttings and sowing. Here we mainly introduce the methods of cutting and sowing, because these two methods are more convenient and commonly used to propagate elderberry.

Cutting propagation

The preparation activity to be done before cutting is to select the soil first. Generally, we choose plain sandy soil, which must be disinfected first. Then, cut the one-year-old branches with good growth as materials, and cut the branches into cuttings about 20 cm long each, making sure that each cutting has more than 3 buds. Bundle ten cuttings together and soak them in clean water. When cutting, ensure that the distance between them is about 15 cm.

Seed propagation

When selecting seeds, you should take them from plants that are growing well, which will help ensure the germination rate of the seeds. After picking the seeds, wash them and place them in a shady place or in a clean cloth bag. The seeds should then be mixed with sandy soil, around November, in a ratio of 1:3. The sowing time is April of the second year. Do not scatter the seeds too densely. Just cover the surface with a layer of fine sand after sowing.

Elderberry propagation precautions

After cuttings, water thoroughly and maintain a regular watering schedule of once a week. Provide shade in summer to avoid direct sunlight. For seed propagation, fertilize once in late autumn and water thoroughly, and pay attention to frost prevention in winter.
