How to propagate Cyperus

How to propagate Cyperus

Cyperus rotundus cutting propagation

The cuttings of Cyperus rotundus can be divided into two forms: soil cuttings and water cuttings.

Soil plug

It usually needs to be done during the summer growing season. The specific method is: cut it 5 to 6 cm below the umbrella-shaped bracts at the top of the stem, cut off the tip of the bracts, leaving 3 to 4 cm long, trim it into a leaf disk with a diameter of 6 to 8 cm, then insert the flower stem into a pot or sand bed filled with sand, let the leaf disk stick to the sand surface, and place it in a cool place, maintain the humidity of the air and potting soil, and the Cyperus rotundus will begin to take root and sprout in about 20 days, and small plants will germinate.

Water plug

Fill a clean wide-mouth bottle with cold boiled water at a temperature of 25°C. Cut it 8 cm below the umbrella-shaped bracts at the top of the stem, cut off half of each bract, and insert them into the prepared bottle. Afterwards, new buds will grow in the bract axils and grow upwards, with the roots extending into the water. Seedlings can be transplanted in about 20 days. It is necessary to change the cold boiled water every 2 to 3 days to prevent the cuttings from being contaminated by bacteria and rotting.

Propagation of Cyperus rotundus by division

The best time to divide the plants is when repotting in March or April. Take the mother plant out of the pot, cut it into several clumps and pot them separately. Plant them as you divide them, and the survival rate is very high.

Seed propagation of Cyperus rotundus

The seeds are usually picked when they are mature in September or October, placed in a cool place to dry, and then stored. In March or April of the second year, use the broadcasting method to sow the collected seeds into a pot with culture soil, then flatten them and cover them with a thin layer of soil. After watering them sufficiently, cover them with glass to keep the soil in the pot moist. After 10 days, the Cyperus rotundus will sprout one after another, and when the seedlings grow to 5 cm, they can be moved into small pots.
