How to protect foliage plants from cold and frost in winter

Classification of foliage plants' overwintering requirements

First of all, various indoor foliage plants should be classified according to their wintering requirements and management should be strengthened, especially for varieties with poor cold resistance. They should be concentrated in places with warming and insulation when necessary to avoid the invasion of cold winds and allow them to avoid adverse low temperature periods.

Temperature treatment according to local conditions

Secondly, according to the temperature changes in late autumn, allow them to have a transition adaptation process to low temperatures. That is, when the temperature gradually decreases at the turn of autumn and winter, allow indoor foliage plants to gradually exercise in slightly lower temperatures. This can significantly improve their cold-resistant adaptability and fully tap their own cold-resistant potential, thereby improving their ability to resist low temperatures. At the same time, during the low temperature period in winter, it is necessary to avoid uneven temperature changes in the soil to facilitate the safe wintering of the plants. Because a sudden increase in temperature will cause the plants, which are originally in a relatively dormant state, to grow new shoots and leaves. At this time, if the temperature suddenly drops, they are very susceptible to freezing. Similarly, when early spring arrives, the temperature fluctuates unpredictably, and you must also pay attention to protecting indoor foliage plants from cold and frost, so you must wait until the temperature is relatively stable before you can carry out normal fertilizer and water management.

Water and fertilizer management in winter

Third, do a good job in fertilizer and water management during cultivation to facilitate cold and frost prevention. During the low temperature period in winter, water intake must be strictly controlled to keep the body in a relatively dry state. For most varieties, watering once every 5-7 days or longer is enough to maintain the normal life activities of the tree. This is beneficial to increase the concentration of cell sap in the plant and improve its cold resistance. In winter, generally no fertilizer is applied, or less fertilizer is applied, to control its growth and avoid cold and frost. In addition, about a month before the arrival of low temperatures in winter, in addition to normal fertilization management, additional phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be applied, such as spraying 0.3%-0.5% potassium dihydrogen phosphate 2-3 times every other week to make the plants grow strong and to improve the plants' ability to resist cold and survive the winter.
