How to plant green onions to get higher yields: cultivation methods and techniques

Green onions are a common crop in daily life. Many people like to plant some green onions on the edge of their own fields, in front of their doors, or even on their balconies. However, some people often encounter problems such as yellowing green onion leaves and poor growth. This is mainly because a suitable maintenance environment is not provided during planting.

How to grow green onions

1. Planting time

Green onions are usually sown around early October every year. The climate at this time is moderate, with temperatures ranging from about 15-20°C, which is very suitable for the production and cultivation of green onions. On the other hand, the light intensity gradually decreases in autumn and will not kill the green onions.

2. Seedbed preparation

The seedling bed for planting green onions must be guaranteed to have sufficient fertility, loose drainage and flat land. If the depth and looseness of the soil are not guaranteed, the survival rate of the green onions will not be very high after being planted. The weeds in the soil of the seedling bed and the underground pests must be removed in time.

3. Sowing and Soil

When sowing green onions into the soil, it is important to do a good job of planting and spacing. Appropriate spacing can provide the green onions with sufficient growth space and development. Cover the seeds with 1.5-2 cm thick soil, and control the length of the seedlings to about 3-5 cm.

Points to note when planting green onions

1. Choose the right variety

There are two main varieties of green onions: long white and short white. The length of the green onion is related to the variety. The long white variety is most frequently used in production, such as Zhangqiu green onion and Gu green onion.

2. Choose soil and prepare the land

Green onions are suitable for planting on land with deep, fertile, loose and well-drained soil. They need to be deeply plowed and finely raked. It is generally recommended to plow more than 30 centimeters deep. Apply base fertilizer to the soil before planting, and apply 1,000 to 5,000 kilograms of coarse fertilizer per mu. Then, deep loosen the ridges to allow the fertilizer and soil to fully combine.
