How to propagate the red spider lily

How to propagate the red spider lily

Root seed bulb method

The simplest way to propagate Red Spider Lily is to divide the bulbs. Dig the plant out of the soil during the dormant period or after flowering, take the daughter bulbs near the mother bulb and plant them. It will bloom in about one or two years.

Bulb cutting method

Dig the bulbs of the red spider lily out of the soil, rinse them under clean water and remove excess soil.

Use a knife to cut the cleaned base of the bulb into eight-point cuts in a M-shaped pattern. The depth of the cut should be approximately one-half to two-thirds of the length of the bulb.

Sterilize the cut bulb pieces and place them in a cool environment to air dry.

Then insert the bulb into moist sand, perlite or other substrates.

About 3 months later, adventitious buds can be seen forming at the junction of the scales and the base, and small bulbs gradually grow out. After separate cultivation, they can become seedlings.

Tissue culture method

Using MS culture medium, pick pedicels and ovaries as explant materials. After culture, callus tissue will be produced at the incision.

Adventitious roots can be formed after 1 month, and adventitious buds can be formed after 3 to 4 months.

Using pedicels and scales with stems as explant materials can also produce adventitious buds and daughter bulbs.

Breeding sowing method

This type is generally used for hybridization of red spider lily and other varieties.

Since the seeds are dormant in summer, they should be avoided from being sown in summer. They can be sown in other seasons.

Sow the seeds immediately after collecting them, keep the temperature at 20℃, and you will see the radicle emerge in about 15 days.

When sowing in the natural environment, only a few seedlings will grow a leaf in the first growth cycle. The seedlings can be transplanted once during the seedling stage. It takes about 4-5 years for the seedlings to bloom from sowing.
