How to propagate Clematis

How to propagate Clematis

Cutting propagation method

The main propagation method for hybrid Clematis cultivars is cuttings. Take semi-mature branches in July-August, cut at the internode (i.e. the middle of the upper and lower nodes, with 2 buds on the node. Use half peat and half sand as the medium. The cutting depth is when the buds just emerge from the node. The bottom temperature is 15-18℃. After rooting, put it in a 3-inch pot and overwinter in a frost-proof hotbed or greenhouse. Change to a 4-5-inch pot in spring and move it outdoors. Shade and prevent showers in summer, and plant it at the end of October. (Is it not detailed enough? Seed propagation

High quality varieties can be propagated by sowing. If sown in spring, it will germinate in about 3-4 weeks. Sow in autumn and germinate in the warm spring. However, some seeds need to go through a low-temperature vernalization stage before they can germinate, and can only grow normally when the first pair of true leaves appear. Some varieties require two cold periods. After vernalization, the seeds should be refrigerated at 0-3℃ for 40 days, and germination will take about 9 to 10 months. Time is long, wait quietly.

Layering

In March, layering is done with last year's mature branches, which usually take root within 1 year.

Grafting

Hybrids such as Clematis can be grafted onto rootstocks using the cleft grafting method with a single-node scion. There are 1-2 buds on the node, and the length below the node is 5-10 cm. Grafting in a heated and closed environment can easily promote survival.

Division method

Generally, it takes 3 to 4 years for the plants to form a clump, and the clump-forming plants can be divided.
