What to do if freesia grows too tall

What to do if freesia grows too tall

To prevent freesia from growing too tall, you need to plant it deep, strictly control water, get more sun, and be appropriately cold-resistant. Specifically, you need to do the following five things:

Look at the temperature, equal distance

The planting time depends on the local temperature. Planting is usually done when the temperature is around 20°C during the day. If planted too early, freesia will germinate quickly and tend to grow too tall. If the temperature is higher than 20℃ during planting, the bulbs can be buried deeply and no watering can be done for the time being. After the temperature drops, watering can be done normally.

When planting, arrange the sweet alyssum at equal distances. Place smaller bulbs on the outside and larger bulbs in the middle. Large bulbs grow quickly and tend to fall over easily, so the smaller plants on the periphery can serve as support.

Planting should be deep and the base fertilizer should be sufficient

It is best to use an orchid pot for planting freesia, with a depth of about 10 cm. If you plant freesia in a deep pot, the plant will grow tall and upright. Otherwise, it will be listless and easily fall over.

In addition, apply sufficient base fertilizer during planting and add sufficient wood ash or bean cake to the soil. There is no need for frequent top dressing during the subsequent growing period, and a thin liquid fertilizer is enough each time.

Water control during growth period

Water thoroughly after planting and place the potted plants in a cool place. Before budding, water when the soil is dry and gradually increase the light after budding. Heavy water and high temperatures can cause freesia to grow too fast, making the seedlings thin and slender. If this happens, they can be pruned appropriately. When pruning, do not cut flatly, maintain a certain slope to allow the plant to grow naturally.

Sunbathing

Freesia needs sufficient light during its growth period. Whether it is autumn or winter, the plant should enjoy a "sunbath". Exposure to the sun can slow down the life of the plant at that speed and is the fastest way to control leggy growth. But avoid direct sunlight at noon in summer to prevent the plants from being burned. In addition, stopping the plant from sunbathing during its flowering period and providing appropriate shade can help prolong the flowering period.

Keep low temperature during growth period

Freesia can withstand low temperatures, and in low temperature environments, it grows slowly and can be cultivated into a short and strong plant shape. In winter, the plant can be placed outdoors for maintenance (temperature above 0℃), and the plant will grow well.
