How to sow and propagate Hosta

Sowing propagation of Hosta

Soil disinfection

To disinfect the soil for sowing, you can crush the soil and expose it to the sun for a few days. The best way is to find an unused pot, heat it in the pot, and any pests and diseases will be scalded to death.

Seed germination

Put the seeds in warm water (feel it with your hand, it should not be too hot) and soak for 12 to 24 hours. Pay attention while soaking. When the seeds absorb water and swell, you can take them out.

sowing

Treat seeds differently according to their size:

Small particles

For seeds that are too small to pick up, wet the end of a toothpick and stick the seeds one by one on the surface of the soil, keeping a distance of 1 cm between the seeds.

Cover the seeds with a layer of soil, about 1 cm deep, not too deep.

Then put the flower pot into the water. The depth of the water should be 1/2 of the height of the flower pot, and the water should not cover the seeds. Keep the soil moist by soaking the pot.

Large particles

For seeds with larger particles, place them directly into the soil with a spacing of 2 to 3 cm.

After sowing, cover the soil with a thickness of 2 to 3 times that of the seeds.

Use a spray or a finer sprinkler to moisten the soil, and then water again a few days later when the soil in the pot is slightly dry, adhering to the principle of small amounts and multiple times. When watering, do not water too hard to avoid the seeds being washed out of the soil.

Management after sowing

When sowing in autumn, it is very easy to encounter cold waves. You can wrap the flower pots with plastic film to keep warm and moist.

When the seedlings can be seen, remove the film in time and let the seedlings get more sunlight before 9:30 in the morning or after 3:30 in the afternoon.

After the seedlings emerge from the soil, they can be selected appropriately, and unhealthy seedlings can be pulled out to leave enough growth space for the remaining seedlings.

When the seedlings have grown 3 or more leaves, they can be transplanted into pots.
