Key points for managing Hosta in four seasons

Spring Management of Hosta

Placement

On east, south, west and north facing balconies.

Maintenance

Repot and change the soil in April and May . Choose sandy loam with good drainage and deep soil layer. Remember to disinfect it before use.

Cultivation and management in spring are relatively extensive. Just don't place it in the sun, avoid direct sunlight, and keep the soil moist and the environment shady and humid at all times. But be sure to place it in a bright location, not too dark.

Many new leaves will grow in spring, so make sure there is enough water and fertilizer. Choose well-rotted organic fertilizer and apply it frequently in small amounts. Because hosta likes a humid environment, sprinkle water on the leaves and the surrounding environment several times a day.

Summer management of hosta

Placement

On east and north facing balconies.

Maintenance

Hosta is resistant to high temperatures but not to sunlight. The temperature is high and the sun is strong in summer, so you should avoid sun exposure. When the temperature is high, spray water all around to cool down.

Summer is the flowering season, so ensure sufficient water and fertilizer. Pay attention to the time when watering and do not water at noon.

After flowering, clean up the dead flowers and branches in time.

Autumn Management of Hosta

Placement

On east, south, west and north facing balconies.

Maintenance

Hosta basically does not grow new leaves in autumn and does not require much fertilizer, so you can stop fertilizing. When the temperature drops in late autumn, the above-ground part of the hosta may freeze and die. Remove the dead part, move the pot to a corner of the balcony, and keep the soil in the pot dry.

You can also change the pot in October and November . Change the pot before the dormant period to ensure that the roots and rhizomes can safely overwinter.

Winter management of hosta

Placement

It’s up to you. In winter, the hosta enters a dormant period and no watering or fertilizing is needed. Just preserve the roots and rhizomes and don’t do it manually.
