What family does Epiphyllum belong to? Is it a dioecious plant?

1. What family of plants is it?

Epiphyllum is a plant belonging to the Cactaceae family and is an epiphytic succulent shrub. The branches are mostly leafy and laterally flattened, lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, with wavy or deeply crenate edges, thick midribs, and branches of old plants producing aerial roots. The flowers are solitary in small funnel-shaped nests on the sides of the branches, open at night and are fragrant.

2. Growth habits

It likes to grow in a mild and humid environment, and does not like to grow in a low temperature environment. In winter, the temperature should be controlled and the growth temperature should not be lower than five degrees Celsius. It should be given sufficient light absorption under normal circumstances, but it is not suitable for strong direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will cause sunburn to its branches and leaves, affecting the normal growth of Epiphyllum.

The soil for growing Epiphyllum should be slightly acidic sandy soil that is rich in humus, has good drainage, is loose and fertile. This kind of soil can meet the growth needs of the plant, promote its absorption of nutrients, and make it grow stronger.

2. Is it a dioecious plant?

Epiphyllum is a monoecious, bisexual flower. A bisexual flower refers to a flower of angiosperm that has both pistils and stamens. This kind of flower is called a bisexual flower. When female and male flowers grow on the same plant, it is called monoecious. Based on the structure of the bisexual flowers, we can tell whether they are complete flowers or incomplete flowers.
