When and how to graft a pomegranate

When and how to graft a pomegranate

1. Grafting time

Pomegranates are usually grafted in spring. The temperature rises in March and April, and the plants begin to enter their peak growth season, and the success rate after grafting is higher. It is also more conducive to germination and growth.

2. Grafting method

1. Branch selection: Choose branches that are thick and strong. Keep the upper leaves and new shoots and cut the bottom into wedges. It should be noted that the branches cannot be thicker than the rootstock, otherwise nutrients cannot be supplied from the rootstock to the grafted branches.

2. Rootstock treatment: Rootstocks are generally selected from plants of the same family and genus. Behead the rootstock, then make a cut in the middle of the cut surface, about 5 cm deep. And trim this area appropriately to ensure that there is enough space for the branches to be inserted.

3. Grafting process: Insert the wedge-shaped part at the bottom of the branch into the cut of the rootstock. The cambium of the two must be aligned to ensure the transport of nutrients. Then use tape to wrap the joint firmly, and the grafting is completed.

4. Management after grafting: After grafting, observe regularly to see if there are new shoots growing. If the growth does not improve after two weeks and instead becomes dry, it means that the grafting has failed and a second grafting is required.
