Respiration of plants

Respiration of plants

1. What is

Respiration is the process of the plant's cells absorbing O2, which is then gradually oxidized and decomposed under the action of a series of enzymes, thereby converting organic matter into CO2 and water, and releasing energy. This is a very important step in the growth process and is of great significance to the plant's growth activities. Note that only living cells can carry out this activity. It is one of the requirements of life. All organs of a living plant can carry out this activity. Even if the cells are separated from the plant, as long as they are living cells or tissues, they can still carry out this activity. However, if the cells die, they will no longer be able to carry out this activity.

In an environment with sufficient oxygen, a large amount of energy will be released, which can be supplied to the plants again. If oxygen is relatively scarce, only a small amount of energy can be released, and it will also decompose into lactic acid or alcohol, which are harmful substances and are not conducive to plant growth.

2. Significance

1. Providing energy: Plants respire mainly to provide energy for living organisms. This energy can then act on the plants themselves and be used for a series of life activities such as cell division, plant growth, and absorption of mineral elements.

2. Provide raw materials: Some intermediates may be produced during the breathing process, which can become raw materials for synthesizing important compounds in the body.
