Watering Clematis in Winter

Watering Clematis in Winter

1. Watering in winter

Clematis is very sensitive to water. If you water it too much, the roots will easily be submerged, but insufficient water is also not good for its growth. When watering in winter, control the amount of water to keep the substrate moist, but without water accumulation. You can insert your finger about 4-5 cm into the soil. If it feels moist, there is no need to water.

2. How to survive the winter

1. Light: The growth of Clematis cannot be separated from sufficient light. Especially in winter, the sunlight is relatively soft and will not burn the plants. You can place it in a sunny place all day, with at least 6 hours of sunlight a day.

2. Temperature: Clematis has strong cold resistance, but some varieties are afraid of low temperatures. Among them, the evergreen series and F series are easily frostbitten in winter, so you should put them in a warm place, or put a plastic bag on the top to keep them warm.

3. Fertilization: Clematis can be fertilized in winter, but only base fertilizer can be added. Dig out some of the topsoil, mix some organic fertilizer and bone meal into it, and then cover it with potting soil. This provides a continuous supply of nutrients, helping it grow and bloom.

4. Pruning: Clematis needs to be pruned in late winter. Large-flowered plants should be pruned lightly, keeping the overall structure unchanged and cutting off some of the overly long branches. Late-flowering plants need to be heavily pruned, with most of the branches and leaves cut off to allow them to sprout again. For early-flowering plants, just remove the dead and weak branches.
