Tips for pruning wolfberry trees

Tips for pruning wolfberry trees

1. Summer pruning of wolfberry trees

Wolfberry trees need to be pruned in the summer, which is the peak growth season. When pruning wolfberries, you can promptly remove the overgrown branches on the roots, trunk, and backbone branches. Generally, pruning is done every 8-10 days to avoid excessive consumption of nutrients. For wolfberry trees in the early fruiting period, multiple pruning is needed to quickly expand the crown, thereby forming a large number of fruiting branches. For wolfberry trees in the peak fruiting period, timely thinning, pinching and pruning should be carried out to increase the fruiting branches.

2. Winter pruning of wolfberry trees

Winter pruning is carried out after the wolfberry leaves fall in winter and before they sprout in spring. When pruning, first cut off old branches and dry branches, remove the root sprouts and superfluous branches, remove diseased branches, dead branches, old branches, horizontal branches, weak branches in the trunk, and cut off weak branches that do not bear fruit to improve ventilation and light conditions inside the tree, thereby promoting fruit development. Branches whose base of the wolfberry tree's crown is less than 35 cm from the ground should be pruned in time.

3. Methods of pruning wolfberry trees

Shortening: Shortening of wolfberry trees means cutting off part of the branches, which is divided into light pruning, medium pruning and heavy pruning.

Thinning: wolfberry thinning is to cut the branches from the base.

Pinching: During the growing season of wolfberry trees, the tender part at the front of the new shoots can be cut off.

Pruning: Shortening perennial branches, also known as pruning.

Scaling: One-year-old branches do not need to be pruned. Allowing them to grow can moderate the branch growth and promote the differentiation of buds.
