How to prune roses

1. Pruning during dormancy

Pruning roses is a relatively rigorous job, which is divided into two modes. One is pruning during the dormant period after leaf fall, and the other is pruning during the growing season. Pruning during the dormant period after leaf fall is to retain two to four buds on the branches of the current year, and all the rest should be cut off, which requires moderate heavy pruning. Rose flowers are nurtured in the new buds that sprout in spring, so we prune them more heavily, so that strong branches will sprout in the second year and better flowers will bloom in spring. If pruning is not timely or the pruning force is insufficient in winter, the branches that sprout in the second spring will be thin, resulting in weak flowers.

2. Pruning during the growing season

For pruning during the growing season, it is necessary to prune away branches that are too dense and affect ventilation, or prune away branches that are more seriously diseased and insect-infested.

In addition, another important task is to prune the dead flowers. Generally speaking, pruning should be done from the first leaflet with five leaflets when looking down from the flower head of the rose. Because it is a compound leaf, a leaf is composed of several leaflets. Only a leaf with more than five leaflets can become a complete leaf, and the leaf bud of this leaf can be a strong bud. Therefore, when pruning, we should prune from the first leaf with five leaflets downwards, and cut it off about 1 cm to 1.5 cm high from the second leaf.

The pruning cuts should not be close to the leaves, because after pruning, the rose will retract from the wound. If they are too close, the buds under the cuts will dry up and be injured, affecting the growth of new branches. After pruning, the buds under the cuts will be stimulated to germinate, and the new branches that have just grown will bloom new flowers. The pruning of roses requires the coordination of these two types of pruning in order to grow strong and bloom vigorously.
