In recent years, as public awareness of the health benefits of celery has increased, the area of celery cultivation has continued to expand. Celery prefers cool climates, and its optimal growing temperature range is 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. When temperatures exceed 30 degrees Celsius, celery growth slows down and becomes more susceptible to disease. For celery seed germination, the ideal temperature is also between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. If the temperature drops below 15 degrees Celsius, the germination rate of the seeds will drop significantly. Once the temperature exceeds 30 degrees Celsius, the seeds will find it difficult to germinate. Let’s learn about celery sowing method and sowing time. 1. Celery sowing time Spring celery: Sow in January in northern regions, plant out from March to April, and harvest around June. The suitable sowing period in the Yangtze River Basin is March. Sowing too early may be affected by low temperatures, affecting yield and quality. Summer celery: Grow seedlings in the open field from April to May, transplant from June to July, and harvest in late August. The growing conditions for celery grown outdoors in summer are poor, the yield is low, and there are many diseases and pests. Autumn celery: Sow in June to July in the north, plant out in August to September, and harvest from October to December. The South can be postponed at the appropriate time. Winter celery: It is grown in areas with higher temperatures. It can be sown outdoors south of the Yangtze River Basin, but needs to be grown in greenhouses in the north. In the south, seeds are sown from September to November and harvested in April of the following year. 2. Celery sowing method Seed selection: Choose appropriate celery varieties based on market demand and planting techniques. Note that celery seeds have a dormant period of more than a month, so you should use seeds from the previous year. Germination: Celery seeds germinate best at 4°C to 30°C, with the best temperature being around 20°C. If conditions permit, temperature change treatment can be carried out to increase the germination rate. Water and fertilizer management: Celery has a shallow root system and requires more water. It should be irrigated in small amounts and frequently, and watering should be avoided during high temperature periods. Apply fertilizer 2-3 times during the seedling stage, mainly urea. Pest and disease control: prevention is the main approach, crop rotation interval should be more than 2 years, attention should be paid to seedbed disinfection, and strong seedlings should be cultivated. In general, celery cultivation requires choosing appropriate management methods based on variety, planting time, region and planting method (open air or greenhouse) to improve yield and quality.
