How to prune miniature roses

Pruning methods

First of all, during the flowering period of the miniature rose, when the flowers fade, cut off 8-12 cm of the branches below the flowers. Heavy pruning is required before spring budding. Generally, 3-4 main branches are retained, and 3-5 cm are required at the base of each branch.

Secondly, pay attention to timely cutting off the withered flowers of miniature roses. This is a necessary task, which can concentrate nutrients and promote more flowers and longer flowering periods. Otherwise, some axillary buds close to the remaining flowers will easily germinate, and then produce weak branches, which will not only consume the nutrients of the plant, but also destroy the plant shape, and the flowers that bloom will mostly be deformed or inferior small flowers.

After the first batch of flowers bloom, medium branches need to be pruned in the middle, leaving 3-4 buds; weak branches need to be heavily pruned, leaving 1-2 buds; strong branches need to be lightly pruned, leaving about 5 buds, and growth should be appropriately inhibited. The second pruning needs to be strictly controlled. You only need to cut below the second leaf under the remaining flower, and retain the axillary buds of the second leaf.

After the beginning of autumn, pruning after flowering is done in the middle, leaving 3-4 buds on each branch. In order to maintain the balance of the plant shape, you can also go back to the upper batch of flowering branches and cut them up and down. At the same time, cut off diseased branches, overcrowded branches, overgrown branches, overlapping and crossing branches, etc. Pruning in winter is mainly for shaping, cutting off dead branches, diseased branches, crossing branches and other poorly growing branches. If it is a plant that is growing vigorously and has a well-proportioned shape, generally one-third of the whole plant is cut off. If it is a weak plant, cut off about two-thirds of the plant and retain 3-4 strong main branches.
