Rose cutting method and time

Rose cutting method and time

Rose is a plant with strong adaptability and high ornamental value. It is suitable for planting throughout the year, especially when it is propagated by cuttings in certain seasons, when its growing conditions are more ideal. Let’s learn in detail about the method and time of rose cuttings.

1. Best time for cuttings

May in spring and October in autumn are the best times for rose cuttings. The temperature is moderate, about 20-25 degrees, which is conducive to the rooting of roses.

2. Selection of cutting pots

Choose a flower pot with a diameter of 20 cm to ensure good air permeability and help root development. Use a mixture of humus garden soil, horse manure and river sand in proportion as the substrate.

3. Preparation before cutting

Spray the potting soil until it is slightly moist before cuttings. Select strong semi-lignified branches of the current year, about 6-10 cm in length.

4. Cutting operation

Use a sharp knife to cut the cuttings at the nodes. The cut should be smooth and neat. Remove the lower leaves and keep 3-4 leaflets on the top. Dip the cuttings in vitamin B12 solution, take them out, dry them, and then plant them.

5. Cutting depth

Insert into the soil 3-4 cm deep. Use chopsticks to poke holes in the soil and insert the cuttings, compact the soil with your hands to ensure that the cuttings are in full contact with the soil, and water them thoroughly.

6. Management after cutting

Cover the flower pot with a plastic bag, keep it moist, avoid direct sunlight, and spray water every day for about 10 days. Maintain appropriate shade and the rose will take root after about two months.

In short, using semi-lignified branches as cuttings will increase the survival rate of cuttings. However, for precious varieties of roses, it is recommended to use layering or grafting to propagate them.
