How to grow Begonia

How to grow Begonia

Variations of Begonia

There are five types of begonia varieties, namely: single-winged begonia, Chinese begonia, hairy Chinese begonia, soft-haired Chinese begonia, full-column begonia

Growth habits of begonia

Temperature requirements

Begonia is suitable for growing in an environment with a temperature of 19-24℃, and the minimum temperature in winter must be maintained above 10℃. If the temperature is lower than 10℃, the leaves are very susceptible to cold, but its rhizomes are relatively cold-resistant. Therefore, when growing begonias, you must create a sufficiently warm environment for them. Only in a warm environment can they grow healthily and quickly and produce bright flowers and fresh green branches and leaves.

Lighting requirements

Begonia is very sensitive to light, and direct sunlight can easily burn its leaves. It likes to grow in a semi-shaded environment. In seasons with higher temperatures, it is appropriate to use diffuse light, while in winter when the temperature is lower, sufficient light must be ensured.

Water requirements

Begonia likes to live in a humid environment, so pay attention to watering it in time. When watering, pay attention to maintaining a high air humidity. If you want to maintain a high air humidity, you can frequently spray water mist on the leaves and around the flower pots. Also, be careful not to make the soil in the pot too moist when watering. If the soil in the pot is too moist, it will cause root rot and even cause the death of the entire begonia plant.

Soil requirements

The soil is loose, well-drained, slightly acidic sandy soil rich in humus. The editor recommends using compost soil, leaf mold and carbon soil.

Fertilization requirements

Begonias need more watering and fertilization during their growing period to ensure that they grow healthily and quickly. Half a month after planting, you can apply decomposed cake fertilizer water once. Thereafter, during the growing period, you should apply light fertilizer water every 20-30 days. After the first flowering, you should increase the application of phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer and reduce the application of nitrogen fertilizer.

Disease and Pest Control of Begonia

Begonias are susceptible to aphids, mealybugs and red spider mites, and are susceptible to powdery mildew and bacterial blight. To prevent the infection and spread of pests and diseases, we usually improve ventilation conditions and avoid dense planting during cultivation. If begonias are found to be attacked by pests and diseases, and infected plants and leaves appear, they should be removed immediately. If diseases occur, various fungicides can be used to inhibit the spread of pests and diseases.

This is all I have to say about the cultivation methods of Begonia. Begonia is a very good ornamental and decorative plant. If you are attracted to it and want to grow it, don’t miss this article.
