Precautions for raising cold orchids at home

Choose the right soil

Choosing good soil is the first step to growing orchids well. The editor has consulted a lot of information and also read flower lovers' suggestions on soil matching for orchids, and found the most suitable soil matching method.

It is made of pond bed stone or planting stone (or river sand as a substitute) 40%, mountain mud (the native black soil of orchids) 35%, mushroom chaff or waste sawdust from growing edible fungi (must be disinfected before use) 15%, and snake wood (or fern roots) 10%. Professional soil is very important for growing orchids well.

Reasonable shading

Cold orchid originally grew in dense forests in high mountains, where the environment was relatively shaded. Therefore, in home cultivation, appropriate shade should be provided to avoid excessive sunlight burning the leaves. The editor recommends setting up a sunshade net at home. The degree of shading should be adjusted according to the degree of sunlight, so that the leaves can be exposed to more sunlight without burning them.

Control watering

The amount of watering must be controlled, and try to keep the soil in the pot moist but not wet, and dry but not dry. For beginners, orchids are very afraid of lack of water when growing, but frequent watering will cause root rot, which is the reason for most orchid cultivation failures.

Master the correct watering method: no matter whether the pot is big or small, water it once every 8 to 15 days in spring, once every 4 to 6 days in summer, once every 5 to 10 days in autumn, and once every 20 days or even more than a month in winter and early spring.

Strictly prevent pollution

The leaves of the Cymbidium are slender and have many stomata. The thin leaves have a large contact area with the air, and it can only grow well if the environment is fresh. For home cultivation, the orchid should be placed away from cooking fumes and air-conditioning outlets, and the leaves should be rinsed frequently with clean water. In other words, as long as the air feels fresh, the winter orchid will grow well.

Avoid impatience

Growing orchids is a way to cultivate your character and improve your temperament. As the owner of a cold orchid, you must have enough patience and not be too eager for quick success. Some beginners lack understanding of the growth habits and patterns of Cymbidium, and make a fuss about any problem that arises. They repeatedly troubleshoot and over-pamper or let the Cymbidium grow too freely, and the Cymbidium will not grow well.

The cold orchid also understands human nature. If you understand it and care about it often, it will naturally sprout and emit fragrance every year. Don't spoil it!
