Planting time and method of northern beans

Planting time and method of northern beans

Green beans, also known as cowpeas, are a common vegetable. It has a well-developed root system and can grow all year round. It has strong adaptability and high temperature resistance, and has high planting benefits. It is currently planted in both the north and south of my country. So what is the time and method for planting beans in the north? Let’s learn more about it below.

Planting time of beans in the north

In the north, beans can generally be planted during the following two time periods. One is around Grain Rain in spring, and the other is August and September in autumn. The temperature and light conditions at this time are suitable for the growth and development of beans. However, the specific planting time depends on factors such as region, climate and variety.

Northern beans planting method

1. Land preparation and fertilization

Beans prefer soil with a deep layer. Choose land rich in organic matter and where beans were not planted last year. Before sowing, the land should be plowed 25 cm deep. Apply 5000 kg of organic fertilizer and 50 kg of special compound fertilizer for vegetables per mu as base fertilizer, and then level it into small beds 1.2 m wide.

2. Seed selection and processing

Choose seeds that are plump, free of pests and diseases, and undamaged. Dry them in the sun for 1-2 days before sowing to remove impurities. Then soak the seeds in the medicine for about twenty minutes, take them out, rinse them three or four times with clean water, drain the water, and then put them in a suitable temperature for germination. After most of the seeds germinate, they can be sown in the field.

3. Sowing method

The hole sowing method is usually adopted, with row spacing of about 60 cm and plant spacing of about 40 cm. First, use tools to dig holes and water the holes thoroughly. The amount of water should not be too large to avoid excessive humidity, which will easily rot the bean seeds and affect the germination of cowpeas. After the water seeps in, put 3-4 seeds in each hole to ensure the germination rate.

4. Seedling management

No fertilizer is needed during the seedling stage to avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, which will cause the cowpea seedlings to grow vigorously and affect the cowpea yield. When the cowpea grows 3-4 true leaves, it can be thinned out, leaving 2 healthy seedlings in each hole. In addition, after thinning, the roots of cowpeas are easy to be exposed to the soil. The soil should be compacted by hand to prevent the roots from losing water and drying out when exposed to the air. After the seedlings are replaced, sufficient water should be poured to promote the growth of new roots and strengthen the roots.

5. Build the scaffolding at the right time

When the bean plants grow to 30 cm, or when the seedlings stretch and sway their vines, it is necessary to erect a trellis in time to guide the plants to grow upward. Usually a sunny afternoon is chosen to build a V-shaped frame, and then the new vines are connected to the frame.

In general, the north is very suitable for growing beans, so pay attention to the planting time and method. In addition, in order to increase the pod-setting rate of beans, attention should be paid to correct sowing and seedling raising, and at the same time, management in the early and late stages should be strengthened, and basically there will be no major problems.
