Common varieties of lavender

Lavandula angustifolia

Also called true lavender or English lavender. Native to the western Mediterranean region, it has a high oil yield and is of the highest quality for travel. The essential oil obtained after extraction can be used directly on the skin. The main planting areas are the United Kingdom in Europe, the mountainous areas of Bulgaria, Australia in Oceania and a small amount in Qingshui, Gansu Province in mainland China.

Lavender

The leaves are wider than those of narrow-leaved lavender, and the oil yield and quality are average. It is generally grown in gardening.

Hybrid Lavender

It is a hybrid of narrow-leaved lavender and broad-leaved lavender. It has the highest oil yield and high quality, so it is widely used in perfumes, soaps and daily chemical products. It is also the most widely planted lavender variety in the world, with the main planting areas being the Provence region of France and the Xinjiang Yili region of mainland China.

In addition, many different types of varieties have been cultivated. Other commonly planted species for ornamental purposes include: fern-leaf lavender, toothed-leaf lavender, Canary lavender, cotton-wool lavender, feather-leaf lavender, Spanish lavender, and artificially cultivated green lavender.

Main classification of lavender

Native lavender

Also known as English lavender, it has the best quality and is often used to make gay perfumes and spices. It has thinner leaves and shorter flower spikes.

Long spike lavender

Also known as mint lavender, it has wider leaves and longer flower stems and flower spikes.

Hybrid Lavender

It is a hybrid of native lavender and long-spike lavender. It is cultivated in large quantities. Most of the lavender in the flower fields of Provence, France is of this type.

Lavender Lady

This is a winner of the American Flower Variety Selection Award and is the most eye-catching among the combined potted plants. It is best grown as an annual. Sow this autumn and it will bloom with lush, fragrant flowers next spring, with neat and uniform plants blooming continuously.

Monster Lavender

It blooms light blue flowers from June to August every year, and its leaves are gray-green, lacy and fragrant. It blooms later than "Lady Lavender" and is not as uniform as "Lady Lavender".
