Balcony vegetable planting starts with soil selection

Balcony vegetable planting starts with soil selection

What kind of soil is good soil?

Good aeration: can effectively transport air and water to the roots of vegetables.

Good drainage: If the soil is difficult to dry, the roots are prone to being in a state of oxygen deprivation and are prone to rot. Therefore, the soil must have good drainage.

Have a certain water retention capacity: if the soil drainage is too strong, it is easy to cause the soil to dry out, so

Weakly acidic: Most vegetables prefer a weakly acidic environment.

Where does soil come from?

Buy: Some of the high-quality soils sold on the market have already been prepared with leaf mold, fertilizer, etc. and can be used directly. If there is "suitable for crops" on the packaging, you should check it carefully and also make sure that it has been adjusted to a weak acid environment.

Mix it yourself: After growing vegetables for a long time, you can try to mix the soil according to the types of vegetables you grow. Use Akadama soil as the main soil, and then add other soil types to adjust the air permeability and drainage.

The proportion of your own soil

Akadama: Volcanic soil with excellent drainage, aeration, and water retention. The main soil used for growing vegetables at home is Akadama.

Leaf mold: nutrient soil formed by the decomposition and fermentation of plant branches and leaves by microorganisms in the soil. It has good air permeability, water retention and fertilizer retention properties.

Compost: Organic matter such as bark and cow dung is formed through fermentation.

Vermiculite soil: Vermiculite is one of the minerals. Vermiculite soil has the characteristics of light weight, good air permeability, strong water retention and good fertilizer retention.
