Reasons why hydrangeas don’t bloom

Reasons why hydrangeas don’t bloom

1. Increase lighting

1. Reason: Hydrangea likes a slightly cool environment, but it must have sufficient light. If there is insufficient light, it will easily grow too tall, and eventually the leaves will grow too large, affecting its growth. The leaves will consume too many nutrients, which will greatly affect the formation of flower buds, causing it to not bloom.

2. Solution: Move it to a place with sufficient light, especially in winter. In spring and autumn, you can just use scattered light.

2. Reduce lighting time

1. Reason: Sometimes, if the plant is placed indoors and illuminated by light at night, the lighting time will be too long, affecting the differentiation of flower buds and thus affecting flowering.

2. Solution: When the flower buds are differentiating, do not give it too much light for a long time, less than 10 hours a day will be enough to promote flowering.

3. Proper pruning

1. Reason: Hydrangeas usually bloom on old branches. If the old branches are not pruned, it will affect flowering next year.

2. Solution: After the flowers have faded last year, cut off the remaining flowers and ensure that there are 3 to 4 buds on each branch. All other branches can be cut off. The best time is before the end of August.

4. Lower the temperature

1. Reason: Many hydrangeas like to stay in a low temperature environment before blooming. If the temperature is higher than 10 degrees, it will affect the differentiation of flower buds, resulting in the inability to bloom.

2. Solution: When its flower buds begin to differentiate, place it in an environment with a temperature below 10.

5. Reduce nitrogen fertilizer

1. Reason: Although it likes fertilizer very much, if it is applied improperly, it will affect its flowering, especially when there is too much nitrogen fertilizer, it will have the opposite effect.

2. Solution: After it blooms every year, apply less nitrogen fertilizer and more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, so that it can bloom earlier.
