How to grow perilla?

1. Seed treatment and germination

Perilla seeds take a long time to fully germinate. In order to shorten the dormancy period, low temperature and gibberellin treatment can be used. Treating the newly harvested seeds with a gibberellin solution, storing them under low temperature and light conditions at 3°C ​​for 5 to 10 days, and then transferring them to light conditions at 15 to 20°C for 12 days can significantly improve the germination rate.

2. Sowing and Seedling Raising

In the Jiangnan region, the best results are achieved by using small greenhouses to grow seedlings in mid-March. Before sowing, the soil should be watered thoroughly and the sowing rate should be 10 to 14 grams per square meter. After sowing, cover with a thin layer of soil, sprinkle with straw, and cover with mulch and a small arch shed to keep warm and moist. It will germinate in 7 to 10 days. Pay attention to removing the ground film and thinning the seedlings in time to prevent the seedlings from growing too tall, and remove the greenhouse film in April to enhance the adaptability of the plants.

3. Land preparation and planting

Deeply plow and dry the soil 10 to 15 days before transplanting and apply sufficient base fertilizer. 100 kg of compound fertilizer , 3,000 kg of human feces and urine, and 5,000 kg of garbage fertilizer are applied per mu. After land preparation, make ridges 1.2 meters wide and 0.9 meters wide, keeping them flat. Spray herbicides before planting, and plant 2 days later with a row spacing of 0.15 meters. Perilla can also be cultivated in protected areas for edible purposes, such as the cultivation of bud purple and spike purple.

4. Field Management

During the growth period, apply urea 7 to 8 times according to the growth trend and keep the soil moist. Remove the first leaves 20 to 25 days after planting, and remove branches in time to promote the growth of main stem leaves. For plants that are not kept for seeds, pruning and pinching can be carried out in early September to improve leaf quality.

5. Leaf Harvesting

The tender stems of edible perilla can be picked at any time as needed. The harvesting standard for export perilla is that the widest part of the leaves is more than 12 cm, without damage or disease spots. Picking begins in late May to early June, with the peak harvesting period being mid-to-late June and late July to early August. During the peak period, a pair of leaves can be picked every 3 to 4 days, and at other times, a pair can be picked every 6 to 7 days. From late May to early September, 20 to 23 pairs of leaves can be harvested, and the yield per plant can reach about 120 grams after pickling. When the seeds of medicinal perilla leaves are ripe in autumn, the fruit clusters are cut off, and the leaves and stems are dried in the shade and stored.
