Let’s learn more about it below.

Which month is the best to plant potted watermelons?

The best time to plant potted watermelons is generally around March or April each spring. If you wait until May or June to plant watermelons in pots, not only will the seedlings not grow well, you may also miss the best flowering and fruiting period.

How to grow potted watermelon?

1. Variety selection

It is generally recommended to choose small watermelon varieties for potted watermelons, such as Special Xiaofeng , Thumb Watermelon, Early Spring Red Jade, etc.

2. Prepare the potting soil

(1) Potted container: Watermelon has a well-developed root system. In order to ensure the normal growth of the root system, a container of appropriate size should be used. The container for potted watermelons is generally about 28-32cm in diameter and about 50cm high. Note that you should choose a container with small holes at the bottom to allow water to flow out.

(2) Pot soil requirements: Prepare loose, breathable, fertile sandy loam. You can use one part nutrient soil, one part garden soil, one part humus soil, and an appropriate amount of organic fertilizer , mix them and plant directly.

3. Seed treatment

Before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water for about half an hour. After soaking, put them on paper to absorb the water, and place them in a warm environment to germinate. Wait until the seed emblem opens to reveal white buds before sowing. This method ensures early germination and a high germination rate.

4. Sowing method

Sprinkle the watermelon seeds evenly in the soil, cover with a thin layer of soil, water appropriately to keep them moist, and the seedlings will soon emerge.

5. Daily management

Sufficient light conditions should be ensured throughout the entire growth process of watermelon. If the balcony has poor lighting, special attention should be paid to creating conditions for it. In addition, watermelon is drought-resistant but not water-resistant, so it is best not to replenish water too much or too quickly. Although small watermelons require less fertilizer , appropriate application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers can ensure the sweetness and size of the watermelon.

In addition, watermelon is a climbing plant. If the balcony space is large enough, you can let the seedlings grow on the ground. Otherwise, it is best to set up a trellis to help the vines grow upward. After the watermelon blooms, the male flowers that opened that day should be used to smear the female flowers that opened that day, so that the pollen of the male flowers can be scattered on the stigma of the female flowers to complete auxiliary pollination.

Generally speaking, it is best to plant potted watermelons in spring from March to April. After determining the right time, and supplemented with scientific planting management, basically under normal circumstances, you can see the vines full of large fruits in about 2 months.
