What to do if azalea is frozen

What to do if azalea is frozen

1. Leaf beating

Because of the cold, the leaves are likely to have died or turned yellow. At this time, we have to remove them, but we can't trim the branches too early, because even though the leaves fall, its green branches can still carry out photosynthesis. Generally, if the damage is minor, remove the leaves; if the damage is major, remove the branches.

In addition, there is another reason not to prune too early. If the branches are cut off, the wounds still need a lot of nutrients to heal, so a lot of nutrients will be lost, which will not help recover from frost damage. Therefore, the general time for pruning is before the buds begin to sprout, and the shape cannot be fixed in one go.

At the beginning, we only cut a small part and cut off those dead ones. After the buds grow out, we cut off those that cannot grow buds. When cutting, the cuts must be smoothed, and the frostbitten areas must also be trimmed smooth, and then they must be disinfected. We should also note that after pruning, many dense spring shoots will grow. At this time, we must deal with them in time and make them evenly distributed.

2. Others

We must be careful not to let the temperature in the room be too low. It is best to keep it above three degrees, and we must not keep it close to the stove, because this place is very dry, and this kind of flower prefers places with high humidity. In addition, we must put it in a place with strong light, because the light is very weak in winter. If the temperature outside is above three degrees, it is better to let it bask in the sun, because it is very likely to drop its leaves if it lacks sunlight for a long time.

When there is dust, we can spray water to wash away the dust, so that the leaves will not fall off easily. If it is in the south, where the temperature occasionally drops below zero, you can still leave it outside for the winter.

If it is frostbitten, we need to apply more nitrogen fertilizer, a little more each time, more often, start with a thin application and then make it thicker later. In addition, you need to apply fertilizer to its leaves and supplement it with trace elements. After thawing, you need to loosen the soil to raise the soil temperature.
