Earliest planting time for spring corn

Earliest planting time for spring corn

After entering March, as the temperature gradually warms up, it is almost time to plant spring corn. The quality of sowing plays a very important role in the corn yield . Let’s talk about the earliest sowing time of spring corn.

1. The earliest planting time for spring corn

The sowing period of spring corn is generally from late April to early May. The Huanghuai and Hai regions are divided into spring corn and summer corn. Spring corn is also sown at this time, while summer corn is sown after the winter wheat is harvested, which is roughly around June.

After corn is sown, it will only germinate in 7 days when the ground temperature at 10 cm is stably above 12°C. If the ground temperature does not reach this temperature, the corn seeds will stay in the soil for too long, which will affect the germination rate, and the seeds that barely germinate will also form weak seedlings. Therefore, we would like to remind farmers that this spring corn planting must be timed appropriately according to temperature changes.

2. High-yield planting technology of spring corn

1. Seed selection and processing

Selecting high-quality seeds is the basis for increasing corn yields. When choosing seeds, look for seeds with higher purity, higher germination rate, and fewer diseases and pests. The purchased seeds must be disinfected first. Common methods include drying the seeds in the sun, soaking the seeds in warm water, etc. The treated seeds can effectively reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests and increase the germination rate.

2. Land preparation

Land is the basis of agricultural production, and good land conditions are conducive to the growth of corn. First of all, deep tillage should be carried out to break up soil clods and increase soil porosity, which is conducive to seed germination and root growth. Secondly, base fertilizer should be applied reasonably according to soil fertility to ensure sufficient nutrient supply during corn growth.

3. Seeding technology

(1) Sowing time: When planting corn in spring, you should choose an appropriate sowing time. Generally, sowing should be done when the temperature is stable above 10°C and the soil moisture is suitable.

(2) Sowing depth: The sowing depth should be determined according to soil texture and moisture conditions, generally 3-5 cm is appropriate.

(3) Seeding density: The seeding density should be reasonably determined based on factors such as soil fertility, variety characteristics, and cultivation goals to ensure that there are sufficient nutrients and light resources during the growth of corn.

4. Field management

(1) Check and replenish seedlings: After the corn seedlings emerge, check the emergence status in time and replenish seedlings in time for plots with missing or dead seedlings.

(2) Thinning and transplanting: When the corn has 3-4 leaves, thin out the seedlings, remove sick and weak seedlings, and maintain a reasonable distance between seedlings.

(3) Fertilization and watering: Apply fertilizer in a timely manner according to the growth needs of corn and maintain appropriate soil moisture.

(4) Pest and disease control: Pay attention to the pest and disease situation during the growth of corn, and take timely measures to prevent and control it to ensure the healthy growth of corn.

To sum up, when planting corn in spring, as long as you do a good job in seed selection and processing, land preparation, sowing technology, and field management, you can achieve the goal of uniform emergence and high yield.
