When should yam be planted? How to plant?

Nowadays, many consumers like to order yam -related dishes when ordering food in restaurants. Yam is not only delicious but also rich in nutritional value. Therefore, more and more friends are planting yam. Let’s learn in detail about when to plant yam? How to plant?

1. Planting time

Yams are usually planted in spring, and the best time to sow is generally between late March and mid-April. As for harvesting, it usually starts in October and can last until late February of the following year.

2. Loosening the soil and weeding

When planting yam in the southern region, due to the hot and rainy season, the soil is prone to compaction, especially in dry land without cover. Weeds grow rapidly after rain or irrigation, so regular weeding and weeding are required, usually three times. The depth of tillage should be gradually increased, but it should be appropriately shallow in the later stages of growth to prevent damage to the root system and affect yield.

3. Build support frame in time

Although yam is primarily a root crop, its above-ground part has the characteristic of twining growth. During the growth period of yam, support frames should be built in time to enhance field ventilation and light transmission, promote rhizome growth, prevent branches and vines from growing on the ground, and reduce the occurrence of diseases. When the yam plant grows to about 20 cm high, bamboo strips or branches should be inserted next to it for the yam vines to climb. Make sure the support frame is stable and the height is controlled at about 20 cm.

4. Water and fertilizer management

When planting yam, pay attention to proper watering to promote root growth and improve rhizome quality. Insufficient moisture may cause the yams to become misshapen or split. When watering for the first time, be careful to control the amount of water to avoid overdosage. Yam has a high demand for fertilizer . In addition to applying sufficient base fertilizer, it also needs top dressing about three times during the growth period, when the plant is 35-40 cm tall, in July, and in late August. Top dressing is mainly carried out by furrow application, and the amount of fertilizer applied is reasonably adjusted according to soil fertility and fertilizer source.

The above is an introduction to the planting time and methods of yam. Yam can be cultivated in all parts of China, but due to differences in temperature and climatic conditions in different places, the suitable planting time will vary.
