How to manage grape vines in winter?

As the temperature drops, it is time to pay more attention to the management of grape vines in winter. Only by taking good measures to prevent cold and keep warm can growers ensure that the grape vines can safely overwinter and lay a solid foundation for a good harvest next year. So how to manage grape vines in winter? Let’s take a look with the editor below.

1. Plastic surgery

Winter pruning is an important part of grape production. Its main purpose is to remove useless and dense branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, and damaged old branches, and to cut back the old branches of the current year to reduce water evaporation from the branches in winter and select the mother branches that will bear fruit next year. When pruning, cut off dead branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, useless secondary branches and overgrown branches, and try to retain fully mature new shoots with full and plump buds.

2. Garden cleaning and sterilization

After shaping and pruning is completed, the orchard will be left with a large number of pruned branches that need to be cleaned up. In combination with winter pruning, the dead branches and leaves in the orchard as well as the scattered diseased fruits, diseased ears, diseased leaves, diseased branches, tendrils, etc. discarded in the orchard after picking the fruits should be gathered together and buried deep outside the orchard or destroyed. At the same time, spray the medicine 1-2 times to clean the garden and sterilize. You can choose 40% DuPont Fuxing 6000 times liquid + 90% DuPont Wanling 2500 times liquid + enhancer 1500 times liquid.

3. Deep plowing of garden soil

Most vineyards are overgrown with weeds and have poor soil permeability. After long-term operations and trampling in the vineyard, the soil has become compacted. It is required to carry out deep tillage, the depth of which is generally 25-30 cm. The depth between plants should be shallow and between rows should be deep. It can also be combined with the application of basal fertilizer.

4. Fertilization

After the grapes are harvested, a large amount of nutrients are consumed. In order to ensure that the grapes can safely survive the winter and grow vigorously in the coming year, they need to be fertilized before winter (around October). When applying basal fertilizer, you can combine it with tilling the soil throughout the garden. The tillage depth should be such as not to damage the root system, usually 20-25 cm. Fertilizers are mainly organic fertilizers , supplemented by chemical fertilizers.

5. Winter irrigation

Ten days before burying the grapes in winter anti-freeze soil, they should be watered once to prevent root frost damage and early spring drought. When watering, be sure to water enough, with the soil reaching saturation as the standard.

6. Bury the soil to prevent cold

In areas where the temperature drops below -12°C in winter, the plants should be buried to prevent cold. The thickness of the burial should be 15-20 cm. The first shallow burial should be done in mid-October for vines over three years old and in late September to early October for young vines. The second deep burial is generally scheduled from the end of October to the beginning of December. This method of burying the grapes can effectively protect the roots of the grapes and prevent frost damage.

The above is an introduction to how to manage grape vines in winter. Growers can also use quicklime , sulfur powder, salt, vegetable oil and water to mix thoroughly and apply them to the tree trunks. Before freezing, cover the roots of the grape tree trunks with fine soil to a thickness of 20-30 cm, and remove it when the soil thaws next year.
