When should garlic be planted?

Garlic, as an economic crop , can indeed bring higher planting returns, which has led some farmers to consider abandoning traditional crop planting and turning to garlic. But before planting garlic, farmers need to fully assess and prepare for possible risks. For example, the sowing time of garlic is very important. Let’s learn and understand together when to plant garlic?

1. Variety characteristics and sowing time

The diversity of garlic varieties determines different sowing times. It is mainly divided into three types: garlic sprout garlic, early-maturing garlic and late-maturing garlic. Garlic shoots garlic is mainly harvested as garlic shoots, which are available early and have a high price, so the sowing time is the earliest, usually in late August. Early-maturing garlic is sown a little later, around early September, and matures about 10 to 15 days earlier than late-maturing garlic. Late-maturing garlic is sown in late to mid-September. Since it matures later, its yield is relatively low when the market supply is sufficient.

2. Regional differences

According to a traditional agricultural proverb, "plant onions at the beginning of autumn and plant garlic at the White Dew." The Huanghuai and Hai regions usually start planting garlic at the White Dew season, which is after the harvest of spring-sown crops such as peanuts and corn, around early to mid-September. As for the planting of garlic after the harvest of summer crops such as summer corn, peanuts, soybeans, etc., it needs to be postponed to mid-to-late October. However, due to the drop in temperature in mid-to-late October, most areas are no longer suitable for sowing garlic, and only some areas in the south can still do so.

3. Harvest time of previous crop

The sowing of garlic also needs to take into account the harvest time of the previous crop. Garlic can only be sown after the previous crop has been harvested. In some cases, if no crops were planted on the previous land, it may be necessary to wait until the land is contracted before planting can begin. In most cases, the presence of a previous crop will affect the sowing time of garlic.

The above is an introduction to several key points that need to be considered when sowing garlic. The sowing time is linked to many factors, so it mainly depends on the actual situation.
