Saxifraga cultivation methods and techniques

Saxifraga cultivation methods and techniques

Saxifrage , also known as stone lotus leaf, is a perennial herb that prefers a cool and humid environment. The leaves of Saxifrage are round and hairy, like tiger ears, hence the name. The front of the Saxifrage leaves is green and the back is purple. Below, the editor will introduce the methods and techniques of growing Saxifrage. Let’s take a look.

1. Breeding method

The reproduction of Saxifrage is mainly through sowing and division. When sowing, choose fertile, moist, and well-breathable soil. Seedlings will emerge about half a month after sowing. Propagation by division needs to be done in spring or autumn.

2. Soil

Saxifrage has average requirements for soil, but if it is potted, you should try to choose soil with good drainage and air permeability, such as sandy soil containing more organic matter.

3. Temperature

Saxifrage likes a warm environment, and the most suitable growth temperature is between 15-25℃. It is also relatively cold-resistant and can survive the winter in temperatures as low as 5°C. However, the variegated variety of tricolor saxifrage is not cold-resistant. The wintering temperature is 15℃. If the temperature is lower than this, it will die. Therefore, keeping warm in winter is also very necessary.

4. Lighting

In terms of light, if there is insufficient light, the leaf color will become dull. Indoors, shade is also needed in summer to avoid direct sunlight. Saxifrage does not need much sunlight in winter, just occasional sunlight is enough.

5. Watering

Saxifrage likes a humid environment and the soil needs to be kept moist, but not too waterlogged. In summer, you can increase the frequency of watering appropriately, but in winter, you need to control watering to avoid the soil in the pot being too moist. It is best to maintain a frequency of watering every three or four days. However, the amount of watering at one time does not need to be too much, basically just soaking the surface of the soil.

6. Fertilization

Saxifrage does not require much fertilizer . Generally, it is sufficient to apply an appropriate amount of organic fertilizer or compound fertilizer during the growth period. During the growth period of the plant, you can apply decomposed thin liquid fertilizer every 15-20 days. This can provide nutrients for the plant and allow the plant to have enough nutrients to grow.

7. Pest and disease control

Saxifrage is relatively resistant to diseases and pests, but its growth conditions still need to be observed regularly, and any diseases and pests found must be dealt with in a timely manner.

The above are the methods and techniques for growing Saxifrage. Although Saxifrage is not a variety that can bloom often, its shape is very cute, and this plant is more conducive to growing in winter. Because saxifrage prefers a cool, humid environment, it may not grow well in the summer due to the high temperature.
