Type I and II pruningThere are three ways to prune clematis, depending on the variety. The second type of pruning refers to light pruning in winter, which is often suitable for large-flowered varieties that bloom in spring. Evergreen and long-petaled plants are more suitable for a type of pruning, which is not done in spring, or only the dead branches are pruned. Late-flowering plants are more suitable for type three pruning, which requires heavy pruning in spring to remove most of the branches and leaves. 2. Pruning timeThe time for the second type of pruning is in late winter and early spring. In the warmer areas in the south, pruning can be done a little earlier, and in Guangdong and Guangxi regions it can be done in early December. In northern regions, the winter is relatively cold, so pruning needs to wait until the end of January to the beginning of February. Pruning too early can easily break dormancy, and if the plant encounters low temperatures, it may be frozen. 3. How to pruneThe second type of pruning should not be too heavy and should not damage the original structure. It only requires shortening the overly long branches. Generally, you should count from the top and start from the first strong bud. Cut the branches 3-4 cm above the buds, leaving 7-10 nodes. In addition, the overly dense branches should be thinned out and the dead and weak branches should be removed. |
