How to grow Christmas cactus

How to grow Christmas cactus

1. Breeding environment

1. Light: Because the plant is a short-day plant, it is necessary to provide scattered light and avoid too strong light. However, in winter and spring, the light is generally not too strong, so you can choose a well-lit location to place it.

2. Temperature: It can grow normally between 5 and 30 degrees. From late fall to winter, it is best kept indoors.

3. Watering: Summer is the dormant period of Christmas cactus. Do not water it at this time, but you can spray some water. In the rest of the season, watering is generally done once a week to ten days.

4. Fertilization: Usually compound fertilizer is used for topdressing, once or twice a month. Before flowering, one or two applications of phosphorus fertilizer can be used to promote flowering. However, it is not suitable to apply fertilizer when the temperature is too high or too low.

5. Soil: The specific requirements are that the soil should be loose, nutritious, well-drained, slightly acidic, etc., and an appropriate amount of base fertilizer should be added into it.

2. Regular pruning

Christmas cactus is usually placed indoors for viewing purposes, so you should pay attention to pruning it regularly. Pruning is usually done in spring. Shorten the stem nodes. If you see branches that are too dense, cut off some of them. It is best to cut off branches that are too old.

3. Breeding Methods

Propagation is generally done by cuttings. It can be done in spring, summer and autumn. Cut off the older stems and let them dry for one to two days before cutting. The substrate can be sandy soil. Water after planting and place in a cool place. After that, water every three to five days. It will take about a month to take root.
